The project is calledVenueand it’s a collaboration between the Nevada Museum of Art and Studio-X NYC, where Manaugh and Twilley are co-directors. “Venue is both a practical and artistic riff on the idea of the surveying expedition,” says Manaugh. It’s a call back to the time when small, heavily instrumented groups would head off to survey the landscape and report what they found.
Venue will travel the continent like a 21st-century Lewis and Clark expedition, visiting people and places across the land to take what Twilley calls “a cultural core sample.” Like any explorers worth their salt, Manaugh and Twilley will be documenting the whole thing, using a dizzying array of specialized devices mounted on customized surveyor’s tripods.
